What Is The Treatment For An Itchy Red Bump On The Back?

I am in Deland Florida. A few weeks ago I found a tick on my back and had my husband take it off as it was impossible for me to reach. I have had severe itching there ever since. I also notice my legs feel heavy and sore . I took a mirror and tried to look at it. It is STILL a red bump the size of a dime or so. I don t think it was a deer tick. should I be alarmed?

Hi,

Did your husband put anything on the bite after he took off the tick? I could be either the beginnings of an infection (like Lyme disease) or an allergy to something your husband put on the bite (or both). Should the red bump get bigger, you definitely should get treatment with an appropriate antibiotic for early Lyme disease (that is doxycyclin or amoxicillin).

Tests will not show early lyme disease and it is the easiest to treat in this stage. It is very hard to distinguish different types of ticks as a layperson. In any case, it is advisable to see your physician if the "bump" gets bigger or doesn't go away within 2 to 3 weeks after the bite. Since Lyme disease can be very devastating if not treated early, I would treat even the suspicion of Lyme disease if you were my relative. Do not forget to re-build your gut flora by taking probiotics after the cycle of the antibiotic!

I hope this helps. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Christine Sauer
