What Is The Reason For Fever And Tenderness In Throat?

Hello. I am a 34 yr old male, overweight, moderate drinker/smoker, otherwise healthy. I have been sick with some sort of upper respiratory bug for six days. The first three days were heavy coughing/sneezing/fatigue/sore throat/fever of 100-102 degrees. No real chest involvement, coughing was due to heavy drip I think. Symptoms began to lessen on the fourth day and continue to improve. Now mild cough, no sneezing, but fever remains 101-102 degrees. Also, I have developed a tenderness/pain very deep in my throat (i.e., not tonsils,) roughly behind the cricoid cartilage. It's not constant, just when I breathe deeply or drink large gulps. I have never experienced this exact pain before and am worried about, e.g., abcess.

Hello dear,

The symptoms as mentioned in your post suggest that you are having an Upper respiratory tract infection.

Presenting with such symptoms, I treat my patients with:
1. Antibiotics like Levofloxacin to take care of the causative organism.
2. Analgesic-antipyretic like Paracetamol.
3. Antihistamine preparations like Allegra for symptomatic relief.
4. Montelukast preparation, as a maintenance therapy.

If symptoms still persist, kindly consult an ENT specialist for proper clinical examination.
Investigations like complete blood count & X ray of chest will be helpful to rule out any pathological cause for the symptoms.

Till then, maintain adequate hydration & take a healthy balance diet.
Also make sure that you are well protected from cold, dust & other allergens.

Wishing you a good health.
Take care.
