What Is The Prognosis For Glioblastoma Multiforme?

My mother in-law was diagnosed with GBM in November 2010. She has been in the hospital ever since. They removed 60% of the tumor, she did chemo for 6 weeks but couldn t finish because her blood count was low. She developed pneumonia a week ago and is on a breathing machine. She is being fed through an IV. Her left side has not functioned since November. She can t really speak anymore and has been confused since the beginning. She was given 6 to 12 months. It s been 3. What can we expect next? Can the pnemonia cause her to die? How much longer can her brain and body hold up?

Oncologist, Surgical 's  Response
I am sorry to confess but your mother-in-law is in a bad state. GBM itself is a very aggressive tumor and has a very poor prognosis even after complete removal. With 60% removal, there was no chance of cure and chemo was given to prolong her life. Now she has developed pneumonia in a chemo induced low immunity state. It is quite likely that she succumbs to the pneumonia, and even if she survives this, she will succumb to her disease in 1-2 months.
