What Is The Most Effective Treatment For Severe Osteoporosis?

I just found out that I have severe osteoporosis. I am 61, and have been taking 1200 MG of calcium plus vitamin D for about 15 years faithfully. I exercise, and also teach fitness classes. (eight lifting, kick boxing, cardio, step aerobics etc. I do have very small bones, am 5 1 1/2 inches and weigh 107 lbs. I am shocked! I had a couple of bad falls about 10 years ago, and didn t break anything. I fell hard enough to cut my knee on a metal bar, right down to the tendon, and never broke a bone. Help!! Lisa

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Severe osteoporosis means that you bone density is less than -3.5 and you have suffered at least one osteoporotic fracture like spine, hip . In this scenario I normally get serum calcium, serum phosphate, serum vitamin D3 and serum alkaline phosphatase with serum PTH. If all the reports are within normal limits then I would start injection Teriparatide, along with supplementation with calcium and vitamin D.

Thanks.
