What Is The Incubation Period Of A Coxsackievirus Infection?

My 3yr old daughters best friend was diagnosed with coxsackie. She was with him at daycare today. He had a fever Wednesday-last night and he developed blisters at school today. I’m worried about her bringing it home to her 6 week old sister. How quickly will I notice symptoms in her? How long is she contagious?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The usual period from initial infection to the onset of signs and symptoms (incubation period) is three to six days. A fever is often the first sign of hand-foot-and-mouth disease, followed by a sore throat and sometimes a poor appetite and malaise. The incubation period of HFMD was typically described as about 3–7 days. People can sometimes be contagious for days or weeks after symptoms go away. Some people, especially adults, may become infected and not develop any symptoms, but they can still spread the virus to others.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
