What Is The Expected Life-expectancy For An 85-year-old With Congestive Heart Failure?

Dad is 85 has dropped down to 124 pounds, was once 190 pounds. He eats very little and has had past heart attacks. Last week he was hospitalized with a 6.2 potassium level (we have since been told it is renal related). He is in congestive heart failure currently at 10%. My children live far away and keep asking me if they should come home now. I cannot get any clear answers from his doctors on his life expectancy but I do know social workers visited him at the rehab facility he is in to ask about his plans for returning home then funerals, burials, etc. Can you give me an idea of a range of life expectancy?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Unfortunately, the prognosis will be poor as the diseases on the terminal stage and pumping action of the heart is severely affected.

Consult a cardiologist and he will direct you accordingly. Drugs like digoxin may be helpful.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
