What Is The Duration Of Norethisterone Intake For PCOS?

My periods have been irregular since I was 14, I started having them at 11. They can have intervals for as little as 45 days or as long as 6 months, as was the most recent one. I am 19 and been recently diagnosed with PCOS and taking norethisterone, is this a contraceptive and how long must I take the medication? I ve been given a dosage of 3 times a day, 5mg tablets

Hello,
Welcome to HCM and thanks for the query.
PCOS is due to Insulin Resistance. Norethisterone is to make the periods regular by producing a withdrawal bleeding cyclically. It does not address the primary problem.
In my opinion, you should reduce your weight if you are overweight / obese and start medicines to correct the insulin resistance. This can be done while you are on norethisterone and it would correct your problem sooner.
I am available if you have further queries.
Take Care,
Dr. Noble Zachariah
