What Is The Correct Dosage Of Prednisone And Zpack For Cough?

my son was prescribed prednisone and zpack for a barking type dry cough, that is unproductive. no wheezing detected. he is 18 and plays baseball. other than the bothersome, annoying cough, he seems well enough. he does feel uncomfortable walking up and down the stairs today. I am nervous about the side effects of this med. the dosage is 4 pills 2 days, 3 pills 2 days and 1 pill for 2 days 10 ml each. what do you think?

Hi,
understand your concern.
Your baseball player son seems to have allergic cough. allergy can be dust allergy, that he inhales while playing.
- The prednisone was given to control his bother sum allergic cough. It is usually given in tapering doses, the starting dose depending on severity of symptoms. In case of chronic cases minimum dose can be maintained ( dose/duration depending on treating doctor's judgement.)
- Short tapering doses of prednisone does not have much of side effects.. Your son also has discomfort in climbing stairs- that indicates extended allergy with blood changes. To avoid the long term use & side effects & to relieve your son of the problem,
- Consult a chest physician, get his cbc, X ray chest done followed by specific medications.
- Get your son tested for allergy detection followed by desensitization therapy.
- Let him try a mask while playing to avoid dust inhalation.
Thanks.
