What Is The Cause Of Smelling Smoke?

About a week ago I started mysteriously smelling smoke periodically throughout the day, and at night when I m in be trying to fall asleep. This isn t a constant smell just occasionally. I haven t smoked in over three years now, no one smokes in my office and we have never smoked inside our home. I have a new car that has never been smoked in either. It s very strange. There is nothing on fire any where, and it is not coming from the furnace or car heater. I heard somewhere that suddenly starting to smell strange things might be indicative of a problem. I know this sounds really weird, but I m a bit concerned. Can you give me any advice?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have sense of smelling smoke which is known as Phantosmia which occurs mainly due to olfactory hallucinations. Another possible cause is you could be troubled with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. here can be many reasons for this condition like acid reflux , poor oral hygiene , oral infection like gingivitis , sinusitis , nervous system dysfunction and bowel obstruction. Take a single tablet of desvenlafaxine daily and your symptoms will resolve in one month. I would suggest you to consult gastroenterologist for proper examination and diagnosis and then start treatment accordingly if your symptoms keeps on persisting. Doctor may order endoscopy or can go for barium swallow study. Doctor may refer you to oral pathologist or ENT specialist . For now maintain proper oral hygiene. Take diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables. drink plenty of water along with that take green tea 2-3 times a day. For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder you need to consult psychiatrist for that.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
