What Is The Cause Of Red Color And Sore On Toe?

My fourth right toe has been a mottled, red/purple color and very sore for about a year. I lost the nail on it a few months ago, but it has grown back. Also, a thick layer of skin came off about the same time. I am a 64-year old female, 5 10 , 135#, and exercise daily, including 2-3 miles walking on treadmill. (My walking shoes were professionally fitted, so should be ok.) I also have arthritis and Raynaud s Disease. I went to Podiatrist then Rheumatologist last year, had many blood tests, and they ruled out Lupus and several other possible causes. Basically all they did was confirm the Raynaud s--which I already knew--but no possible cause. It s always sore, but sometimes worse than others--sometimes hurts just to touch it, let alone wear shoes. What could cause this, and are there any recommended walking shoes with large toe box and cushioned interior? Thanks so much! --Dena

HI
Thank for asking to HCM
I really appreciate your concern apart form the skin etiology and other systemic disease fungal infection need to be ruled out, nothing to loose if you could start the treatment keeping in mind that this could be fungal infection of nail and the best treatment would be local application of "Miconazole ointment"
if this fails to responds then you can try steroid (If you do not have the Diabetic ) hope this information helps you have nice day.
I find this answer helpful
