What Is The Cause Of Poor Concentration?

Hi my name is Gabriela. Recently Im experiencing big problems with concentration and with my memory. Also my ability to communicate cleary is getting worse. I did an IQ test few years ago where the result was 130 and today my result is 80...I feel like my head is empty... Im young (31). Can this be a brain tumour?

Neurologist 's  Response
Hello Gabriela!

Your symptoms could be related to depression.

Anyway, I would recommend consulting with your family doctor for a physical check up and some tests:

- complete blood count for anemia
- thyroid hormone levels for possible dysfunction
- vitamin B12 plasma levels
- blood electrolytes.

Do you feel anxious or depressed?

Consulting with a neurologist for some cognitive tests may be needed. A brain MRI would help exclude possible degenerative changes in the brain compatible with dementia.

Further tests may be needed.

If all the above tests result normal, especially if you have other symptom of depression or anxiety, you should consult with a psychiatrist, because these psychiatric disorders can mimic your symptoms.

Hope to have been helpful!

Best wishes, Dr. Aida
