What Is The Brown Streak Appearing In The Thunbnail?

Hi! Yesterday I noticed a very faint brown streak about 1mm in width on the edge of my thumbnail, going from the top to the bottom of the nail. When viewed head on, i saw that the pigment is in the nail itself and did not extend to the bottom of the nail nor the nailbed. I am afraid that it will be melanoma. I am Chinese and 22years old. Should I get this checked out at a dermatologist?

I can understand your concern for the brown streak appearing in the thumbnail.

In general the description you have given is commonly is seen in the condition known as "Melanonychia". This is one of the commonest condition with pigmented streak on the nail.

This is due to deposition of pigment on the nail-bed and it appears as a pigmented area. It is quite a normal condition and there is nothing to be worried for the same.

Even then to fully confirm my diagnosis as well to reassure you completely I very humbly request you to kindly upload few good resolution pictures of the nails.

You can visit a dermatologist for a dermascopy examination to rule out anything serious.
