What Is Blood In Phlegm Produced By Constant Cough Indicative Of?

My son 13 yrs old has blood present in phlem produced by coughing and blowing his nose. We have been sick for a while though not consistently. He brought a cold home from school shortly before winter break, he recovered mostly after passing it to me but came down with it again after it made the rounds with my parents. He has some significant allergies and pollen has been high so there has been a lot of nose blowing. He is also not the best at coughing up what s in his lungs despite urging. There are no other signs and other than then running nose, a slight sore through which has since cleared and an occasional headache, he presents no other symptoms. He is rarely sick so we have never experienced this set of symptoms previously. Is this something to be worried about or merely the result of frequent nose blowing and coughing?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your son have symptoms of blood in phlegm produced by constant cough which is due to severe upper respiratory tract infection. I would suggest you not to worry about it. Apply wet cold sheets on your head to lower down body temperature. You should take antibacterial drugs such as Levofloxacin along with anti-inflammatory drug. Avoid hot, spicy and sharp food substances. Take diet rich in multivitamins and vitamin C. Your symptoms will resolve in 4-5 days. If symptoms keeps on persisting visit ENT specialist once and get some routine blood investigation done. Take diet rich in multivitamins. Drink plenty of water. Take hot milk rich in turmeric as it will booster immunity. You should get x-ray chest done and get it examined.

Hope your concern has been resolved.
