What Is A Soft, Tooth-like Mass Near An Erupting Molar In An Infant?

My 17 month old grandson finally got his four front top and bottom teeth. Now he has a molar that is trying to come in but has extra gum over it. He has been seen by a dentist to let us know the extra gum is rare but happens and is painful. HOWEVER, we just noticed what looks like a tooth (same size as his bottom front teeth) on the outside of the same molar trying to come in. It is white and soft.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain a soft tooth like mass that is in place from where a molar is about to erupt seems to be a compound or complex odontoma in case if it is tooth like structure..
Odontoma is an irregularly formed toothlike structure that has tissues similar to tooth.
It can lead to impaction or unerupted tooth, therefore it needs to be extracted so that the natural tooth erupt in its position without resistence..
I would suggest you to consult consult a Paediatrician and get evaluated as a confirmed diagnosis can be done after a proper clinical and radiological evaluation..
In case if it is an Odontoma you should get it extracted..
As of now you can apply numbing gel over painful area and give Tylenol to relieve pain..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
