What Does Vaginal Itching While Suffering From Diabetes Indicate?

62 yr old woman, not sexually active. Overweight, type 2 diabetes, digestive problems & severe arthritis. For the last year, I have had an itchy vulvar area, often resulting in white, scaly patches. No vaginal discharge or pain, however, the outside of my palm s often itch as well. Any idea what would cause this?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear Ma'am, Hi & Welcome.

Based on the history given you seem to be suffering from candidiasis (fungal infection of vagina and the hand).

I advice you to take Clotrimazole or Miconazole for up to 7 days.

These medications are available over the counter and by prescription in the form of cream, ointment, or suppository.

Or your doctor may also recommend a single-dose oral anti fungal drug such as Fluconazole.

Besides, you also need to maintain your blood glucose level within the normal range.

Following preventing measures would reduce the risk for vaginal yeast infections:

1. Avoid tight-fitting clothing, which can make the vaginal area more moist
wearing cotton underwear, which can help keep the moisture level under control
2. Avoid very hot baths or sitting in hot tubs
3. Avoid douches or vaginal sprays &
4. Keep yourself well hydrated.

Hope the advice given above would be beneficial.
A feed back is appreciated.
