What Does This Urine Culture Test Showing Occasional Pus Cells Suggest?

Hi, I have microscopic hematuria. Doctor has further suggested for a Urine Culture test. The test report says, Gram Stain (Direct): Show occasional pus cells and no organism. Culture Yeilds: No growth after 48 hrs of incubation. Could you please tell me whether it is a major or minor issue and what is your suggestion. Thanks, Sreedhar Lokaray

Urologist 's  Response
Hello Mr Sreedhar, Welcome to HCM..
I thank you for posting your query here and I'm definitely going to help you out..

I being a surgeon, we encounter so many such cases day in and day out.
I read your question completely and have understood it well enough..

I will analyze all your points and provide necessary explanation..

1. First of all, I need few details like.
A. Your age
B. What complaints did you have to get these tests done.

Because urological like other disease ailments have age and gender specific diagnosis..
Also, your symptoms matter most to clinch the diagnosis.

Anyway..

1. You say you have microscopic Hematuria.
Well, most common cause of Hematuria in young people is stone disease.
Also urinary tract infection, Uti predisposes to Hematuria.

But in elder men, there is high likelihood of bladder or kidney cancer and this needs further evaluation..

2. Your urine culture report is fairly normal..
And that doesn't completely rule out Uti..

3. Major or minor issue again, depends on your age and further evaluation.
You will need these to investigate further..
A. Renal usg scan
B. If age more than 60, urine cytology and cystoscopy.

After thorough evaluation, we can proceed further..
It still could be only Uti which needs 7 to 10 days antibiotic.

Hope this helps you, in case you need any further information, please let me know.
Take care..
