What Does This Ultrasound Report Indicate?

Hello. Last year, I dated a man, who I found out has hepatitis C. I had a hepatitis (A, B, & C) test, lipid panel, and metabolic panel completed 10 months ago. Everything was normal. I have had mild, intermittent RUQ discomfort for about 8 months now. 7 months ago, I experienced a sharper pain than usual and went to the ER. My abdominal ultrasound revealed borderline hepatomegaly with homogeneous echotexture and hepatoportal flow, no evidence of gallstones or gallbladder wall thickening, right kidney was fine, only the pancreatic tail was obscured. Otherwise, the ultrasound was unremarkable. A CBC with differentials was completed at that time (all normal results again). At my ER visit follow up, my PCP believed it may be a dysfunctional gallbladder and suggested a HIDA scan, which I had not had done. Since then, my abdominal discomfort has become more of a dull ache along my right rib cage (beneath my breast to my waistline), so the HIDA scan was put on hold. My PCP tested again for hepatitis 6 months after my initial testing. All 3 types were negative again. About a month later, my PCP did a manual exam and stated that my liver food not feel enlarged to him. He then sent me for liver function tests, including prothrombin time. My thyroid was also tested at my request. Again, everything came back completely normal. That was about 2 months ago. Since all of these lab tests have been normal and I only have evidence of borderline hepatomegaly, my PCP doesn t seem very concerned. I, however, can t stop thinking about (and googling) this everyday ache. I am a 33 year old female, 5 9 , and 220lbs. While I m still considered obese, I have lost 90lbs over the last 2.5 years. I m considering being tested for hepatitis again just to completely rule that out. Do you happen to have any suggestions for further testing that my PCP and myself may not have considered?

Hello,

In my opinion, you are mostly having fatty liver disease because your weight is slightly more than normal. So try to lose 15-20 lbs weight by diet and exercise. Once you achieve weight loss, you will be alright.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Kaushal Bhavsar, Pulmonologist
