What Does This Hemoglobin Level Indicate?

I just got some rest results saying my hemoglobin a1c level is 6.0. I've never had a problem with this before, and having a fairly active lifestyle and eat somewhat healthy. I don't drink carbonated drinks much at all. I don't use alcohol but rarely. I'm 33 and yes the term prediabetic runs in my family. Should I be worried?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Dear user,

I really understand your concern.

A level of A1C 6.0 is equivalent to level of blood sugar 126 mg/dL (7 mmol/L).
So 126 mg/dL (or A1C 6.0) is the highest value in the normal range of blood.

So it can be considered as "prediabetes" (an old-fashionated term that describe the risk for diabetes).

However one single reading doesn't establish the diagnosis of prediabetes/diabetes.

Diabetes is defined as two occasional readings higher than 126 mg/dL.

If you follow a balanced diet, achieving an ideal weight and doing excercises, there's nothing to worry.

Wish you good health.
