Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Does This PSA Value Of 4.7 Despite Being On Bactrim Indicate?
I am 51 with a history of prostatitis, the most recent onset was about three weeks ago. I have been off and on Bactrim since November. I had my first PSA test and it came back at 4.7 so the doctor has asked me to continue on Bactrim for a few more weeks and then retest the PSA. If it doesn t come down then cancer is in play. Should I be concerned at this point?
PSA- Prostate specific antigen is a protein secreted by both normal and cancer cells in the prostate. PSA is often evaluated to confirm the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Men with rising PSA levels can helps to confirm the diagnosis of cancer. Apart from cancer, PSA may be found elevated in other conditions too such as urinary tract infection, prostatitis and BPH- Benign prostatic hyperplasia. High PSA is not always an indication of prostatic cancer.
Digital rectal examination may helps to find the abnormality. The prostate cancer is also seen in individuals even with normal or low PSA levels. Age factor, family history may helps to identify the pathology of the disease, if any. Bactrim is an antibiotic to treat infections. Prostatis, urinary tract infection may to recover from the illness.
