What Does This MRI Report Of The Knee Suggest?

I had an MRI done on my knee and this is a partial diagnosis from the reading: No cartilage loss at the tibiofemoral articulations, slight heterogeneity at lateral, greater than medial, tibiofemoral cartilage. Patellofemoral cartilage is without thinning, though there is heterogeneity and increased signal at cartilage centrally and superiorly at the lateral patellar facet, with some deep fissuring suggested. No knee joint effusion. Edema is noted at the suprapatellar fat pad. The course of neurovasculature is appropriate. Musculature appears unremarkable. No Baker s cyst. I m still in a lot of pain and wanted to know (in english) what all this means

Hi,

Cartilage is a type of connective in the body with thickness between soft tissue and bone. It is made of firm tissue found all over the body most commonly in the joints. It prevents the erosion of the bone during movements. It also decreases the wear and tear in the joint during mobility. Knee joint is formed of thigh bone called femur, leg bone called tibia and patella which is also called as knee cap. Your report says, there is no cartilage loss in the tibiofemoral joint (articulation). But there is mild protein loss in the outer side of the cartilage mentioned as lateral than the inner side which is mentioned as medial.

Patellofemoral cartilage which is found between patella and femur is also normal. But there is mild proteoglycan deficit in the upper outer aspect of the cartilage. There is no fluid collection in the joint mentioned in the report as effusion. There is swelling in the fat tissue present over the patella denoted as edema at suprapatellar fat. This may be due to injury, inflammation. There is no blood vessel and muscle involvement. There are no fluid filled sac like structure in the joint. Pain is due to suprapatellar fat pad edema which will subside with oral NSAIDs. Hot fomentation locally over the knee alleviates the pain.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
