Meniscal tears needs surgery only in two situations.
1.When there is locked knee or persistent pain or recurrent effusion
2. When it is coupled with cruciate ligaments tears
All that you have to do is to follow
RICE protocol that is Rest (Avoid activities that has lead to
injury and further worsening it. sometimes it is better to have crutches)ice compression indirectly if painful
elastic compression bandage to decrease swelling and elevation of leg above heart level while lying down. Use pain killers like Advil, Mortin etc. Do quadriceps strengthening excersizes according to your pain resistance.
Any how if surgery is needed as I mentioned in above two situations then
Arthroscopy is best. Surgical repair with extensive
rehabilitation program for up to six months is better than menisectomy in young age to avoid late onset
osteoarthritis.
