What Does This MRI Report Indicate?

Hello Dr. , I am xxxxxx. My mother recently got an MRI and the findings were degenerative arthritis involving medical compartment of tibiofemoral joint and lateral patellar facet. Myxoid degeneration in the body of medical meniscus with possible degenerative tear along the inferior surface. Mild to moderate synovial joint effusion with grade 1 sprain of medical collateral ligament . She was having knee pain from past 5 months , various medicines were taken before as well.,but no relief..! And before, the knee pain , she used to go to aerobics , where extensive jumping, stepping and squatting was performed by her.! And now, she has stopped doing all.! , as severe pain remains all day long., and even it becomes hard for her to fold and then, straighten her leg at times.., (and vice versa) as well..! Also, she has taken 1 month continuous physiotherapy along with microelectric pulse., but no relief received..!( Her age is 44, if in case needed..!) Sir, I am not sure what do these MRI findings mean..! It would be very helpful by your reply..!

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello,

The MRI report shows presence of degenerative changes in the knee joint. There is degeneration in the knee joint cartilage in the form of myxoid degeneration. In addition, there is sprain in the medial side ligament and collection of fluid in the joint cavity. I suggest you to consult your orthopedician for physiotherapy and intra-articular injection of pain killers.

Hope my answer was helpful. If you have further queries feel free to contact me again.

Thanks and take care.

Regards,
Dr. Shailja Puri, Pathologist and Microbiologist
