What Does The Following Mammogram Report Indicate?
I have been told that my recent mammogramme has shown pin sized calcification. can you tell me any thing more about this . Is it likely to be precancerous or will there be calcification in other body tissues/organs ? I have been booked in for an assessment. Barbara i

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hi, I understand your concern. Calcifications are common findings in mammogram. They are caused by old injuries to breast from various parts of breast. Mostly they are noncancerous The calcifications in clusters / irregular in shape are likely to be precancerous,& the are followed up by biopsy. You have just a pin sized calcification, more over you have not been asked for follow up mammogram /biopsy by radiologist. So rest tension free, it's not likely to be precancerous. Still it's wise to have follow up mammograms 6 monthly to be on safe side. Thanks.
