General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

SLE is never diagnosed by test only. There is a detailed criterion for it which includes symptoms like joint problem, skin or kidney problems plus antibodies. Four out eleven of the above things are needed to diagnose lupus.

So while your positive ANA and reduced C4 may indicate Lupus, but it's only if there are other symptoms like joint pains, skin problems or other which your doctor will assess. It's not only decided on postive antibodies.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
