What Does The Following EEG Report Suggest?

Hi, can you explain me EEG results for my newborn son , he is born on 7/ 26/ 2017- today he is 11 day old.He had birth trauma- hypoxia, hypoglicemia( glucosa was 20), and 3 convulsions in first 72 hours.He was on oxigen, AV, on NICU 7 days.First EEG was when level phenobaebiturat was in his body 50. First Neonatal EEG 7/28/2017 The tracing begins with the infant in quiet sleep characterized by continuos pattern.After only a few apex, the child developed discontinuous pattern with excessive interburst attenuation, prolonged interbust intervals and relatively brief bursts of sharp transients with a lack of the expected complex admixture of faster frequencies.There were no clinical or electrographic seizures. Summary of findings: 1.Abnormal quiet sleep for stated age with excessive interburst -burst ratio and excessive interburst attenuation. 2.This is abnormal EEG because of the above noted abnormal quite sleep pattern which is a nonspecific indicator of diffuse cerebral dysfunction.There were no electrographic seizures recorded. Second EEG on 7/ 31/ 2017 was normal.Normoactive and transitional sleep.There were no clinical or electrographic seizures. Please help me with explanation, my son take phenobarbiturat 3mg/ kg..I am very scared.Thank you

Hello,

He experienced a period of time when not enough oxygen was getting to his brain. This is called hypoxia. Mild hypoxia is fairly common in newborn infants.

The seizures he had were the result of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar). His low blood sugar was quickly corrected by the neonatologists in the NICU.

There were some irregularities on the first EEG and these were due to the effect reduced oxygen had on his brain. The irregularities disappeared by the time the second EEG was done. The EEG had become normal.

This is what happens when the newborn has MILD hypoxia. Babies with mild hypoxia are believed to recover normal brain function completely.

They are not are greater risk for later seizures or learning disabilities.

From what you have shared, it looks like he has an excellent chance of becoming a normal, healthy baby and child.
