What Does The Both Fasting And PP Blood Sugar Levels Of 112 Mg/dl Indicate?

Hi,

Today I've checked my blood sugar level for Fasting and PP. For Fasting blood sample had been collected after 8 hours of the last meal, before breakfast and for PP blood sample had been collected 2 hours after breakfast. Surprisingly both the readings came out as 112 mg/dl. I'm 48 years old and with feminine gender.

Request you to kindly please explain this result.

Thank you for the query.
As per the information provided, you are a 48yrs old lady, with a recently recorded fasting and 2hrs Post prandial blood sugar as 112mg%. I would continue my explanations from here onwards, considering you to be non-diabetic (since you have not mentioned whether you are already a diabetic or not)
Normally, Diabetes mellitus is diagnosed by the following criteria-
Fasting blood sugar more than equal to 126mg%
2 hrs Post prandial blod sugar more than 200mg%
HbAic level more than 6.5%

There is another entity known as impaired glucose tolerance. Subjects having this are more likely to develop diabetes in future.
The criteria are:
Fasting blood sugar between 100 and 125mg%
2hrs Post prandial blood sugar between 140-199mg%

As per your reports you seem to have an impaired fasting glucose (around 112mg%). However, one reading is not enough to establish it. Infact some physicians prefer a fasting of 10 hrs duration, prior to checking the FBS levels. However, if you have risk factors like family history of diabetes or you are overweight, I would advise you to repeat these tests after a month. You can also get a HbAic done (it will give you and idea of your blood sugar status over 3 months). If any abnormalities are noted, you can consult your primary physician.

Hope this helps you out
