What Does The MRI Regarding Lumbar Spine Indicate?

was just interested i have minimal disc bulge in my l3-l4 ,mild broad based bulging of the intervertebral disk is present, with right paracebtral extrude disk material lying on the dorsal aspect of the l5 vertebral body .this abuts the thecal sac with mild central canal narrowing .Mild thickening of the ligamentum flavum is present. No neural exit foramina narrowing are demonstrated ,Both L5 traversing nerve roots are in contct with the l4-l5 disc .The right L5 exiting and s1 traversing nerve root are abutted by the extruded disk material . There is a focal central extrusion of the l5-s1 itervertebral disk.No severe stenosis of the centreal canl .Mild thickening of the ligamentum flavum .No neural exit foramina is present . Conclusion: Miltelevel degenerative changes of the lumbar spine ,more advanced on the L4-L5 level with a right paracentra disk extrusion , lying on the dorsal aspect of the L5 vertebral body .There is an impression of impingement of the L5 exiting and S1 traversing nerves . what is your professional opinion of these MRI Results the next best approach to do ?

Hi,
Thanks for writing in.

You have following findings on MRI.
1. At disc level L3 - L4, there is minimal disc bulge, this is not a concern.

2. At level L4 - L5, there is mild broad based disk bulge with disc being extruded in certain areas with pressure on nerve roots. This is also impinging on the spinal canal and creating pressure on the covering of spinal cord.

3. At level L5 - S1 there is only focal extrusion of the disc with no effect on the spinal canal.

This shows that most of the problems you have are due to disc L4 - L5. The next approach will be to take treatment with nerve pain relievers and get adequate rest.
