What Does Swelling Under The Tongue Indicate?

I engaged in deep kissing last night and my tongue was pulled accidentally, and this morning my salivary glands under my tongue along the lingual frenulum felt a bit puffy. Later this afternoon I saw that the frenulum had become blood-red, swollen, and the region below it in my mouth looks bruised/red. I don't think that it was actually bleeding or torn. It is not very sore, but it is a little sensitive to point my tongue to the side of my mouth. Is this something to be concerned about, how can I treat it, and how long can I expect for it to heal?

Hi.

Thanks for the query.

As per the explanation that you have given in your query, it looks like the tongue has been pulled severely leading to mucosal and muscular injury to the tongue. Redness and pain is due to inflammation caused due to the injury. However, still there does not look anything to be worried for and you can just relax. For reducing pain and inflammation you can take anti-inflammatory painkillers like Ibuprofen and do warm saline gargles to reduce inflammation. Sucking ice can also help in reducing inflammation and pain. You should avoid eating any hard foods and also avoid any activity that can cause further injury to your tongue.
In case if there is no improvement in 4-5 days or the underside of tongue swells more you can get it checked once with an Oral Physician.

Hope this helps
Regards
