What Does Swelling On The Right Ankle Indicate?

Have benn treated for high BP for over 30 years Current age 59. Consistent readings of low 120s and low 80s to high 70s.Lower number on my BP increased over the last several months. Have been of Lisinopril 20/12.5 for several years. 60 days ago low number went above 90-95, was given Norvasc 5mg, after 30days no change. Noticed a swelling in right ankle. Norvasc was increased to 10mg, swelling still an issue, and has increased. Blood work showed no signs of gout.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Gout is not generally diagnosed reliably with blood tests because the uric acid can be normal in some patients with gout. Gout is generally diagnosed clinically. If you have redness and pain with the ankle other than the swelling than gout is very likely and you should be very cautious on diet (avoid alcohol and protein intake) and also review the medications you use for hypertension as some may make gout worse (diuretics).

If you have the swelling but no redness and no pain than it very likely not due to gout but Norvasc (amlodipine) might be the cause of the swelling and the doctor should see to substitute is with another drug that does not have this side effect.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Kind regards,
Antoneta Zotaj, MD
