What Does Swelling On Leg With Bruised Shin After An Injury Indicate?

Husband hit his shin on a tow hitch (on the back of a moving truck ) a week ago. He has a bruise.... His legs have staining/ bad circulation ( for many years) . He is also diabetic. Tonight he noticed his lower leg is swollen. There is also a small open wound which does not look infected. What could be causing the swelling and is this cause of an emergency?

Hi,

Your husband is high-risk of infections, and the symptoms your are describing could be an infection (erysipelas) which is in the early stages. While not an emergency, I would suggest consulting a doctor within 24 hours, and immediately if he develops a fever.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Maria Riechel-Sarup, General & Family Physician
