What Does Swelling In The Stomach And Legs Indicate?

My Mother in Law also has end stage Liver disease with advanced Hepatic Encephalopathy. She has been moved from the hospital into our local Nursing/Rehabilitation Home because she has lost all use in her legs and hasn t been able to walk unassisted, even at home, before her 3 week hospital stay. She has lost years off of her memory and short term memory isn t in tact either, however she is aware of family. She has a lot of swelling in her stomach, legs and feet as well. Blood work showed her ammonia level to be down and was noted to be 7. I am getting mixed answers concerning her prognosis and I want to know what to expect with this. Good Or Bad.. I want to know. What can I expect? Months? a year? Can you give me some advice?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

She may be suffering from cirrhosis with hypertension with ascites with encephalopathy. Which is having poor prognosis unless she undergo liver transplantation. Ascites may be due to fluid collection in the stomach due to portal hypertension she may need to decrease the portal pressure by tips surgery. Avoid high salt intake, restrict fluid intake, use aldactone with furosemide. If symptoms not improved please consult your gastroenterologist he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Penchila Prasad Kandikattu
