What Does Swelling In The Lower Leg And Ankles Indicate?

My husband has been suffering with with a Bakers cyst that has torn. He has swelling of his lower left leg down to the ankle as well as puffiness around his eyes especially in the morning on waking. After ultrasound the doctor said he has Diffuse subcutaneous oedema, a sliver of fluid in the tibial talar joint but no tendon or ligamentous abnormalities. Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I would like to tell you that knee joints require a lubricating fluid (synovial fluid) to freely swing the leg but inflammation of joint like arthritis or cartilage tear in knee injury causes overproduction of synovial fluid and that builds up in back of the knee causing Baker cyst.

To treat Baker cyst, fluid drainage from cyst and physiotherapy will be required. Kindly consult with a physician.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Navneet Bansal
