What Does Swelling In The Ankles Indicate?

I have had swollen ankles for about one month. The left ankle is a little more swollen than the right ankle. I also have some black & blue and pain on and off. It hurts if I wear ankle socks with elastic. I was checked for blood clots. Should I go to a foot doctor?

You should consider re visiting your family doctor.

There are different causes for swelling of the ankles. Some of the more common causes are:

(1) Side effect of medication eg amlodipine, which is a blood pressure medication can cause swelling of the ankles
(2) Heart disease- detectable by sign and symptoms, ECG and echo
(3) Kidney disease- detectable by medical history and blood tests
(4) Liver disease- detectable by medical history and blood tests
(5) Trauma to the ankles, arthritis of the joints
(6) Infection
(7) Venous Disease such as varicose veins

Your doctor can assess you and determine if any of these are present.
