What Does Swelling And Inflammation In The Gums?

Hello, my 3 year old grandson has had a fever for a couple of days and my daughter just noticed last night that his gums are red and swollen, so far he's not complaining about any pain. Is the fever because of his gums and if so what is the cause of the redness and swelling??

Hi,

Thanks for the query.
Swollen and red gums is due to inflammation of the gums due to infection only.
It looks that your grandson has a viral infection leading to Gingivostomatitis and it is the cause for red and swollen gums.
Do not worry, as the infection will subside then gradually the redness and inflammation of the gums will also subside.
You should once consult a Pediatrician and get him evaluated and a clinical examination and a blood test can be done.
He can be advised anti-viral medication if needed and along with it Acetaminophen can be advised for fever.
Do cool compresses over the gums as it can help in reducing inflammation and swelling of gums.
Doing warm saline gargles can help.
