What Does Stiffness In The Neck On The Right Side Indicate?

Hello. Lately, the right side of my neck stiffens up out of the blue, and then my hearing is impaired. This has happened twice now after driving for a lengthy distance. I thought that maybe it was because I was nervous about driving and was just a bit stiff. It happened again today, but this time I was sitting having a coffee with a friend. I stood up to get ready to go and then it hit me. The right side of my neck stiffened up again and I could barely hear my friend talking to me. Should I be concerned? This has happened a total of three times now in the past week.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your query, you have stiffness in the neck on the right side. Well, there can be many reasons for symptoms you mentioned in the query.

But in your case, it seems to have occurred due to cervical spondylosis, muscle spasm, sore throat or bruxism. Apply warm compresses on neck, take muscle relaxant and do warm saline gargles.

I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper examination. Doctor may take history and order endoscopy, blood test, x-ray of upper respiratory track. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics, anti-inflammatory or may refer you to orthopedic surgeon.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
