What Does Soreness On The Tongue Indicate?

My tongue feels sore towards the back as if there is a weight on it. This is also causing pain along my jawbone and down the front of my neck under my chin. I used corsodyl for a couple of weeks and had my teath cleaned and polished. It helped for a couple of days but pain has come back. Very sore on either side of lower jawbone.

Hello,

As per your query, you have symptoms of soreness on the tongue which occurs due to lingual papillitis and could be due to small cysts on lingual frenulum. These occur when papillae become irritated and slightly swollen.

Need not to worry. It generally does not require treatment and clears up within two weeks. Do warm saline rinses 2 to 3 times a day.

If the condition does not get better in few days, then consult oral pathologist for a proper checkup and rule out a condition like herpes or canker sore for pain and if you also have fever Tylenol can be taken.

Maintain good oral hygiene and drink plenty of water. Coat the sore area well will antiviral ointment containing Acyclovir.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
