What Does Sharp Pain Under The Ribcage On The Right Side Indicate?

For the past year or so, I ve been getting a relatively sharp pain under the rib cage on my right side. It seems to come on with exertion. I am overweight. I ve attributed it in the past to some damage to my rib cage from martial arts training in my younger days. I ve always been overweight, but otherwise very healthy, but gained 20 pounds last year after quitting smoking. I can lower the pain considerably by pressing below the rib cage. If I sit down for a minute the pain goes right away. I guess I m concerned this might be a symptom of some kind of liver issue.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I think your symptoms come from gallbladder you may have cholecystitis or cholelythiasis or fatty liver etc. You need to test liver enzymes, FAL, bilirubine. Maybe Cholecystectomy needs to be done if you have cholelythiasis.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
