What Does Severe Pain In The Lower Abdomen Indicate?

Does appendicitis pain come on suddenly? I don t think I experienced any symptoms prior to last night. I started feeling severe pain in my lower abdomen, right at and below the belly button, while in my sleep. Although the pain subsided a bit (only severe when I move) I still have it, more than 10 hours later.
