What Does Severe Pain In The Left Shoulder Indicate?

Back of neck hurts with shooting pain that I think leads to muscle before the left shoulder contracting and hurting. The area around the back of the neck going over my shoulder and a little down my left arm as well as the left back and left chest area is numb. It feels as if I had Novocain shots there. This has persisted for a week and is just getting worse. This morning the right hand side started feeleing numb. I cant look down and it is painful to us a cell phone or computer. I think I could have maybe ruptured a disk or have degenerative disk desease that is now pinching a nerve

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
There are a few possible causes of the symptoms you describe. One is disc disease in the neck and the other is a condition called thoracic outlet syndrome. Both can cause pain in the heck and shoulder area with pain and numbness in the hand. You need to see a doctor and have some testing done to determine the cause and then the appropriate treatment.
