Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Does Severe Pain In The Gums And Throat Indicate?
My daughter has symptoms of severe stabbing pain in her lower gum and ear/throat area. Has had CT of neck which is normal, pain comes and goes at various times. No dental issues. Has had work up by ENT, at a loss for what could be going on. Dr. wants to try Neurontin which I am not quite sure about yet, even if it helps with pain I would like to know where pain is coming from
There are many causes of ear throat area pain. Most common causes are nerve compression pain, tonsillitis, temporomandibular joint disorder.
Coming to your daughter's case, you had been prescribed Neurontin (gabapentin) presuming it to be nerve defect which is most common cause.
Considering the other aspect, we can suspect the possibility of tonsillitis in which such type of pain is quite common. Tonsillitis is inflammation of tonsil which causes pain in throat. Pain extends to ear due to swollen lymph nodes.
Tonsillitis can be confirmed or excluded by culture sensitivity test of swab taken from that area. Streptococcus causes tonsillitis in general.
Coming to treatment antibiotic and ibuprofen (for pain) are first line and surgery (tonsillectomy) in chronic cases.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
