What Does Recurrent Pain Behind The Left Knee Indicate?

Since waking this morning I have a recurring pain behind my left knee. It feels like a pinch. It occurs most when I m sitting, but can also happen when I am standing or walking. If I am standing, I lose strength in my leg when the pain occurs. Is this something serious?
