What Does Pain Under The Ribcage On The Left Side Indicate?
I have had pain in my left side under my ribs with burping for three weeks . It seems to be worse when I first wake. Yesterday the pain seemed to spread across my back. If I put pressure on the pain site It does not cause it to hurt more. I do not have pain anywhere else just on the left side. It is a sharp pain. It does not get worse with eating or drinking. I am 78 years old. This seemed to start after taking baby asprin for just two weeks which I stopped when I got this pain.
Posterior penetrating gastric ulcer usually presents with deep seated boring pain in abdomen with radiation to the back or to the left of the spine.Pain in abdomen at left hypochondrium which had been precipitated by baby aspirin (75 or 88 mg) might be due to gastric ulcer (?pre-existing) .Upper Gi endoscopy will confirm.Meanwhile PPI(proton pump inhibitor) like pantoprazole (standard dose 40 mg orally before food)is the usual advice in such cases pending investigation as mentioned.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
