What Does Pain On The Right Foot Indicate?

I work as a restaurant server and often lately when working I develop a pain in the top of my right foot at the top end of my big toe, there is nothing I can see as swelling or being inflamed but the pain is sharp like needles being stuck into that area and sometimes while sleeping the pain occurs and it s so bad it wakes me up from sleeping. What could be the cause?
