General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

We will try to help you in best way possible. First of all it's sad to know what your husband had been going through lately. Based on the history you have shared, a baseline autoimmune work up and serum uric acid levels and ESR should be done. A rheumatologist review may also be needed and meanwhile OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or Ibuprofen can be used along with supplements for calcium and vitamin D3.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
