What Does Pain In The Buttocks And Legs Indicate?

I m having pain in my left buttocks and is emitting down into my legs. My legs ache and feels tingly as well. Taking an anti-inflammatory but not having much effect. I ve been told I probably have a problem with my sciatica. Legs feel restless. What should I do? My physician says nothing really to do about sciatica except stretches and anti-inflammatories. Any suggestions? Thank you, Dave

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Sciatica is the pain in the lower limbs resulting from irritation of the sciatic nerve. This can result from any cause that results in irritation or inflammation of the sciatic nerve but most probably the result of vertebral herniation. To relieve buttocks pain you need to do the following:

1- Rest your back, by avoiding extreme physical activity such as weightlifting.
2- Prescribe analgesics such as Ibuprofen and topical drugs such as Diclofenac.
3- Muscle strengthening and stretching exercise program.
4- Muscle relaxants.
5- Steroid injections in severe cases.
6- Surgery in cases of Herniated disc.

I hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you have any further questions.

Take care.
