Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I went to the dentist to have a filling replaced. After 3 injections, I was still not numb. We had to postpone the filling. After leaving the dentist's office and as the day wore on, I began to have intense pain in my jaw. The pain has decreased so that now it only hurts when I move my mouth certain ways and expecially when chewing. My face is swollen and there is a hard swollen area at my jaw joint directly in front of my ear. Could the injections have caused TMD or the symptoms of TMD?
As per your complain it seems that while giving a local anaesthesia as the injection was given thrice there are chances that the needle has injured the muscle fibres in that area leading to soreness and pain.
Due to repeated injuries the soft tissues and muscle fibres in that area has got inflamed leading to swelling as a result of inflammatory process..
Moving of the jaw is painful as the muscles gets taut due to injury leading to stiffening and pain..
I would suggest you to do warm fomentations over the swelling as it will help in faster healing..
You can take muscle relaxants for relaxing the muscles and try to open the mouth as much as possible for improving the mouth opening..
If the condition does not resolve consult your dentist.
Hope this information helps..
