What Does Neck Pain On The Right Side Indicate?

I have had neck pain for a while on the right side but a few weeks ago i was drying my hair with head flipped over, and when i flipped my hair back, not too hard, i felt a sharp snap and pop in left side of neck. very painful. since then, that area has been very tender and swollen. It also gets stuck and pops as if its out of place. very painful. Please give me your best counsel. It seems maybe a bulging disc? tendon? ligament? pulled muscle? Its the getting stuck that hurts so much and when it pops out it is excruciating.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Since you do not have a history of any neck discomfort or pain, it should Not be degenerative or herniated disc. It looks more like a pinched inflamed nerve or whiplash. Take Ibuprofen (Advil) or Tylenol, it will help reduce inflammation & pain. Do Not apply heat. If it is a minor sprain or a strain it will get, else visit ER you may need to get examined & investigated. Do slow head exercise if you can but do not apply force if its painful. Your treatment will depend upon the reports of investigations.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K.
