Direct smear shows occasional gram negative bacili and few gram positive cocci in singly and in pairs. Few budding yeast cells and rare hyphal elementsbwere also seen. Smear also shows polymorphonuclear cells and moderate squamous ephithelial cells. What does this mean? Do I have HPV?
Hello and welcome to HCM, The direct smear (site unknown) shows presence of bacteria some of which are gram negative bacilli and some are gram positive cocci. In addition, few budding yeast which is a fungi are also seen. Along with the bacteria and fungi, polymorphonuclear cells or neutrophils are also seen. Polymorphonuclear cells are neutrophils which are increased in bacterial infection. Squamous epithelial cells are also seen besides neutrophils. These findings do not show any feature of HPV infection. The findings suggest presence of bacteria and fungi. Treatment for fungus is required. Bacteria may a normal flora present at the site.
