What Does My OVA1 Test Results Indicate?

Hi, I have history of uterine fibroids that are very bothersome and I also had an ovary removed due to a cyst. I have another cyst on the other. And doctor did do a procedure with the balloon, I m sorry I can t think of the name, but since the procedure the cyst has not gotten any smaller. I just had another pelvic ultrasound as well as an abdominal one and I now have a mass in my uterine lining and the cyst is the dames. We are planning for another hysteroscopy and laparoscopy as well as d&c. My biggest concern, and my question, I had an OVA1 test and I spoke to the nurse this morning to get the results and she said your last test was 3.2 and this time it is 3.6 we would refer you to an onocologist if it were at a 5. She did say it was negative for cancer. But, what does that mean? Im sorry but 3.6 doesn t seem far from 5 to me / Thank you for your help.

OVA 1 is a 5 parameter biomarker test that is recommended by the international association of gynecologic oncologists to estimate the probability of a patient having an ovarian cancer. To put it in a simple way, Biomarker for cancer means that certain molecules which are present in the blood are tested to find out if their levels indicate that there is a probability or a chance that the person may have cancer. OVA1 has been use as one of the combination biomarkers and several research projects indicate that above the threshold or cut off value of 5 in women with a clinically suspected ovarian cyst/mass etc the sensitivity of this test is high , about 96%. Sensitivity of this test here ,means that the test can detect the presence of most types of ovarian cancer. The value that research evidence & trials show as 5 is regarded as a test value above which there are high chances of cancer being present. Ultimately, one must remember that the doctor will not base his judgement just on a test. He/ she will interpret it along with the examination findings. Values below 5 according to evidence based resources indicate that there are lower chances of a mass/ cyst in the ovary being malignant. The final diagnosis however can only be made after the tissue is tested by histopathology . Here the tissues are removed surgically & examined under a microscope to find out if they are benign or malignant ( cancerous). Rest assured , your OVA 1 test values indicate that you have a low chance or probability of ovarian cancer. For further advice please contact your treating doctor. For further information on various lab tests you may access a free and public website called labtestsonline. This gives clear information in simple non medical language about some of the medical lab based tests.
