What Does Low WBC Count And Fatigue Post Recovery From Mono Suggest?

16yo son is 3 months post mono illness. Returned to family doc last week due to extreme fatigue. WBC count of 3.6 - was 4.5 back in April. Also recovering from partial tear of rectus femoris with bone chip at pelvic bone attachment point. Active athlete - injury was first week of June during HS baseball. Family doc recommends recheck of bloodwork in one month or referral to hematologist now. Wondering if we should recheck in one month

Hi,

3.6 is low normal and won't cause any problems. It strongly implies the mono infected cells were killed off. If all the cells are low, this is a problem with the bone marrow. It will be mainly the lymphocytes and not the red cells or platelets. Hematologists are lousy at sports. They won't be helpful on the injuries.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
